His February 2024 statement on voting for H.R. 7217, the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, is his clearest: "In the face of terror and unprovoked aggression, Israel is in a righteous fight for its existence and the United States must stand behind it." He continued: "The nation is our greatest ally in the Middle East and critically needs the support of the West to defend itself against Iranian-backed, extremist militant groups who wish to eradicate it."
His position predates the current war. In a December 2019 interview, his first on the subject after taking office, he said of the U.S.-Israel relationship: "I fully support it; it's the greatest democracy that we have in the Middle East." He added: "It's a critical relationship that we support the democracy, and we support the people." The outlet reported that he agreed with a list of the administration's policies, among them defunding U.S. assistance to the Palestinian Authority and UNRWA, moving the embassy to Jerusalem, withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organisation. In April 2024 he issued a further statement supporting the national security and foreign aid packages.
