But What Can You Do? tracks where 2026 candidates stand on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. How we check

Dan Hartong

How this mark works

We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). There an X also covers fully backing the conduct of the war by the government of Israel without significant reservations, and a question mark also covers speaking about Israel without saying clearly where they stand on U.S. weapons and funding. A dash means No Position Found: we found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.

See a dash? Ask the candidate where they stand, then send us their answer and we'll review it and update the mark. Or volunteer to help review candidates.

No recorded votes on the bills we track. We have not finished reviewing this candidate's public record yet.

Nothing located as of October 2026 has Hartong taking a position on U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, or on U.S. aid to Palestinians. The guides and reports naming him record his candidacy but nothing he has said.

Deep Dive

Dan Hartong, of Lincoln, is the America First Party's nominee in Nebraska's 1st District. The party is one of two new parties formed by petition in Nebraska in 2026; the state Republican Party sued to keep it off the ballot and lost, and it named him on September 1 as one of five candidates. He faces Representative Mike Flood, the Republican, Chris Backemeyer, the Democrat, and Nik Sandman, the Libertarian, on November 3. There are no votes on this record.

This is a genuinely empty record, on these questions and on every other. No campaign website or social media account for him was found. He has not completed Ballotpedia's 2026 candidate survey, the Lincoln Journal Star's voter guide reports that he did not respond to its questionnaire, and his iVoterGuide profile reads "Did not answer" for all 32 of its questions. The party's announcements describe its own priorities and say nothing about him beyond his candidacy. An empty record carries no implication either way.

You are better placed to change this than we are. Ask Hartong directly, or at a candidate forum, and send us the reply: it goes on this page in his own words, which is worth more than anything we could write about him.

Research log

The notes behind this card: what we looked at, what we found, and where each item came from.

Every page named below was opened and read on 2026-10-08 unless the entry says otherwise. No campaign website or campaign social media account was found: Ballotpedia lists no contact for him, and searches for his name with the party, the district and Lincoln found only the party's slate announcements and the guides below. Bands: Position (2024-01-26 onward), Reaction window (2023-10-07 to 2024-01-25), Earlier record (before 2023-10-07), Undated. Undated pages are recorded on the date we read them. No office held by Hartong was found, none of the congressional votes this site tracks is his, and no funding from the committees this site tracks is recorded on this record. Nothing located on this subject falls in the reaction window.

  • Nothing located, at any date.
  • [Undated, read 2026-10-08] His iVoterGuide profile lists "Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?" with "Did not answer". All 32 of its questions read "Did not answer", so the blank is a fact about the guide's coverage of him, not a choice about this question.

What the guides and reports record

  • [Read 2026-10-08] Ballotpedia: "Dan Hartong (America First Party Nebraska) is running for election to the U.S. House to represent Nebraska's 1st Congressional District." and "Dan Hartong has not yet completed Ballotpedia's 2026 Candidate Connection survey." No campaign finance information is yet available from the Federal Election Commission.
  • [2026-09-28] The Lincoln Journal Star's 2026 General Election Voter's Guide for the House names "America First candidate Dan Hartong of Lincoln" and says: "The Journal Star invited District 1 candidates to participate in the Voter's Guide. Dan Hartog did not respond to the questionnaire." (The guide spells his name both ways.)
  • [2026-09-01] Nebraska Public Media, by Matt Olberding, lists him among the party's five candidates: "Dan Hartong, who is running for the 1st District Congressional seat." It reports that the party is "one of two new political parties created this year via petition", that "The state Republican Party sued to keep the America First Party off the ballot but lost", and that the party chairman, John Cartier, names its priorities as "fiscal responsibility, transparency and accountability, and limited government."
  • [2026-09-01] KLIN reports the same slate, "Dan Hartong is the candidate for Nebraska's First Congressional District", and says Cartier "says the party will focus on limiting government, reducing spending and debt, opposing new wars, increasing government transparency and holding elected officials accountable". These are the party chairman's words about the party, not Hartong's.

The race

  • [Read 2026-10-08] Ballotpedia: "Incumbent Mike Flood (R), Christopher Backemeyer (D), Dan Hartong (America First Party Nebraska), and Nik Sandman (L) are running in the general election for U.S. House Nebraska District 1 on November 3, 2026."

Places that could not be read, so nothing is claimed from them

  • A States Newsroom report on the party's nominees: https://www.newsfromthestates.com/node/426320 (403).

Not on the card, and why

  • The party chairman's description of the party's priorities, including "opposing new wars": the chairman's words about the party, not the candidate's. Research page only.
  • The blank iVoterGuide entry: guide coverage, not a position.
