Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Ocasio-Cortez vowed in April 2026 to oppose any future U.S. military aid to Israel, including defensive systems, saying Israel can fund "Iron Dome and other defensive systems" itself. She has also backed cutting the $3.3 billion annual aid.
Ocasio-Cortez represents New York’s 14th District, covering parts of the Bronx and Queens, and is running for re-election.
Her position hardened in a specific and documented way, and the change is the story. On April 1, 2026, speaking at a Democratic Socialists of America forum and in a statement afterwards, she said she would oppose any future U.S. military aid to Israel, including for defensive systems, on the grounds that Israel is "fully capable of funding" its own "Iron Dome and other defensive systems". She added that allies receiving U.S. military aid "must understand that we will provide it consistent with the Leahy amendment and the foreign assistance act", the laws barring U.S. military support to units that violate human rights.
That is a change from how she had argued before. The same report recalls her explaining an earlier vote against a proposal to cut Iron Dome funding: it did nothing "to cut off offensive aid to Israel nor end the flow of US munitions being used in Gaza", and "What it does do is cut off defensive Iron Dome capacities while allowing the actual bombs killing Palestinians to continue." She used to distinguish defensive from offensive aid. In 2026 she stopped.
In June 2026 she supported a House amendment to strike $3.3 billion in annual military aid to Israel from the State Department appropriations bill, and filed an amendment to condition future arms transfers on compliance with international law. In July 2026 she criticized legislation deepening joint U.S. and Israeli military research and integration.
In a March 2024 floor speech she described the situation in Gaza as an unfolding genocide and a forced famine and urged the administration to suspend weapons transfers. Her 2021 amendment to block a $735 million munitions transfer predates the months after October 7, 2023; it and one further amendment from in the months after October 7, 2023 are on the research page. The same report notes Rep. Ro Khanna echoed her, saying Iron Dome is "important & saves lives" but Israel "should be able to buy it on their own", without committing on future votes.
