But What Can You Do? tracks where 2026 candidates stand on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. How we check

Kristi Burke

Democrat · U.S. House, Tennessee District 1

How this mark works

We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). There an X also covers fully backing the conduct of the war by the government of Israel without significant reservations, and a question mark also covers speaking about Israel without saying clearly where they stand on U.S. weapons and funding. A dash means No Position Found: we found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.

See a dash? Ask the candidate where they stand, then send us their answer and we'll review it and update the mark. Or volunteer to help review candidates.

No recorded votes on the bills we track. In their own words on June 25, 2026.

Burke wants U.S. military funding for Israel ended: "I want to state clearly and unapologetically that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, and the United States and our tax dollars are funding it," pledging to stop "the blank check this country keeps writing to Netanyahu and the Israeli government."

Deep Dive

Burke, a muralist and community activist, won the Democratic primary for Tennessee's 1st District on August 6, 2026, and faces incumbent Diana Harshbarger in November.

Her position is her own, published in a June 2026 campaign video statement titled "Kristi on Israel", read in full from the post's text: "I want to state clearly and unapologetically that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, and the United States and our tax dollars are funding it." It continues: "And if you send me to Washington, I will do everything in my power to put a stop to the blank check this country keeps writing to Netanyahu and the Israeli government so they can continue murdering Palestinians. Enough is enough."

The same statement says her campaign "does not, and will never, accept any money from AIPAC or any Israel-adjacent organizations." That is a funding pledge about her own campaign, separate from her position on what the United States sends.

In July 2026 campaign posts she reportedly advocated a U.S. embargo on weapons transfers to Israel; the post could not be opened, so that word is given without quotation marks. She has no located statement on U.S. aid to Palestinians as a distinct question.

Research log

The notes behind this card: what we looked at, what we found, and where each item came from.

U.S. military aid and weapons to Israel

  • [Position, 2026-06-25] Campaign video statement "Kristi on Israel", text recovered from the post's embedded data and confirmed verbatim: "I want to state clearly and unapologetically that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, and the United States and our tax dollars are funding it."... "And if you send me to Washington, I will do everything in my power to put a stop to the blank check this country keeps writing to Netanyahu and the Israeli government so they can continue murdering Palestinians. Enough is enough."
  • [Position, 2026-07-01] Campaign social posts reportedly advocated a U.S. embargo on weapons transfers to Israel. The post returns a login screen (1.5KB); unverified, given attributively.
  • She has no federal voting record.

U.S. aid to Palestinians

  • No statement or documented position found by the research on U.S. aid to Palestinians, UNRWA, or Gaza humanitarian funding as a distinct policy question.

Characterization of the conflict

  • [Position, 2026-06-25] "Israel is committing genocide in Gaza" (verified, above).
  • [Position, 2026-07-01] Campaign messaging characterized the war as "Israel's genocide in Gaza" (same login-walled source; attributive).

Related rhetoric and lobbying

  • [Position, 2026-06-25] Her campaign "does not, and will never, accept any money from AIPAC or any Israel-adjacent organizations. NEVER." (verified, same statement). A money-refusal pledge; recorded as its own item, not as an answer about U.S. weapons or funding.
  • [Position, 2025-10-20] A social post encouraged voters to search "How much AIPAC money have republicans in congress received?" and "How much of Tennessee Tax Dollars went to Israel last year?" The found source is a personal Facebook profile, which is not a usable citation; recorded as unconfirmed.

Safety and antisemitism (context)

  • [Position, 2026-06-25] In the same statement she said allegations of antisemitism are frequently weaponized to dismiss criticism of Israeli policy (localcandidates.org entry also summarizes this; that site renders client-side and was not readable). No standalone statement on domestic antisemitism or Jewish community safety was found.
