Doug Jones
Jones is Alabama's Democratic nominee for governor. In the Senate he cosponsored the 2018 bill authorising U.S. security assistance to the government of Israel at the level the ten-year memorandum set. His campaign has said nothing about weapons, money or aid to Palestinians (research).
Jones served one term in the U.S. Senate, from 2018 to 2021, and is now the Democratic nominee for governor of Alabama. His campaign has been about state matters, and nothing in it addresses U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, U.S. aid to Palestinians, or the conflict.
His Senate record is the substance here, and all of it predates this war. He cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act of 2018, which authorised security assistance to the government of Israel at the level set by the 2016 ten-year memorandum of understanding, and he cosponsored the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act of 2019. In February 2019 he was one of twenty-four of forty-five Senate Democrats to vote for a Middle East security package that reauthorised that assistance and let state governments refuse contracts with companies boycotting the government of Israel.
Speaking in Birmingham in August 2019 he called the alliance one of America's best and said he was worried about its politics: "what I'm fearful of is that the relationship with Israel is now being used as a political weapon to try to divide people... Our alliance is too important to allow that to happen." In the same remarks he said two colleagues barred from entering Israel over their support for boycotts should have been let in, whatever he thought of their views.
