But What Can You Do? tracks where 2026 candidates stand on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. How we check
Sydney Gruters
How this mark works
We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). There an X also covers fully backing the conduct of the war by the government of Israel without significant reservations, and a question mark also covers speaking about Israel without saying clearly where they stand on U.S. weapons and funding. A dash means No Position Found: we found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.
See a dash? Ask the candidate where they stand, then send us their answer and we'll review it and update the mark. Or volunteer to help review candidates.
No recorded votes on the bills we track. We found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.
Nothing located as of September 2026 has Gruters taking a position on U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, or on U.S. aid to Palestinians. Her campaign site sets out six priorities, none of them about foreign policy, and she has not filled in Ballotpedia's questionnaire.
The email has replies@butwhatcanyoudo.org in cc, so we can post their answer on their page in their own words; remove it if you prefer. Keep the subject line as it is, add your name, and send.
You asked Sydney Gruters where they stand.
Deep Dive
Sydney Gruters is the Republican nominee in Florida’s 16th District, the open seat Vern Buchanan is leaving. The district takes in all of Manatee, DeSoto and Hardee counties and parts of Sarasota, Pinellas and Polk. She spent more than a decade on Vern Buchanan’s congressional staff, was district director for Representative Greg Steube, was appointed by President Trump in 2017 as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s rural development state director for Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and most recently ran the New College Foundation. She won the Republican primary on August 18, 2026 with 63.6 percent of the vote and faces Kelly Kirschner and Mark Davis, who has no party affiliation, on November 3.
This is an empty record on these questions rather than a thin one. Her campaign site carries six priorities, each a heading with a single sentence under it: cost of living, a secure border, inflation, election security, housing costs, and seniors and veterans. There is no foreign policy on the site at all, and the words Israel, Gaza, Palestinian, Hamas and foreign aid appear nowhere on it. She has not completed Ballotpedia’s candidate questionnaire. She did not join the Spectrum News forum for candidates in this district on July 22, 2026, where the seven who did attend were asked whether they would vote to authorize the war in Iran. At the one debate she did attend, on July 31, the questions put to the candidates were first priorities, protecting against voter fraud, working with President Trump, whether each would endorse the primary winner, and affordable housing. An empty record carries no implication either way.
One thing is worth saying plainly, because a search will turn it up first. Her husband is Joe Gruters, who is a Florida state senator and the chairman of the Republican National Committee. He has a long public record of his own, in Tallahassee and in national party politics. None of it is hers. Nothing he has said or voted for is on this card, and none of it was used in preparing it.
Her campaign links to accounts on X, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, and none of them could be read here. Their addresses are on her research page so that anyone who can open them may look.
You are better placed to change this than we are. Ask Gruters directly, or at a candidate forum, and send us the reply: it goes on this page in her own words, which is worth more than anything we could write about her.

Research log
The notes behind this card: what we looked at, what we found, and where each item came from.
Every page named below was opened and read on 2026-09-07 unless the entry says otherwise. Her campaign site was read in full: the single page that carries its home, endorsements, priorities and about sections, plus its media page. Bands: Position (2024-01-26 onward), Reaction window (2023-10-07 to 2024-01-25), Earlier record (before 2023-10-07), Undated. Gruters has never held elected office, so none of the congressional votes this site tracks is hers, and no funding from the committees this site tracks is recorded on this record.
U.S. military aid and weapons to the government of Israel
- Nothing located, at any date. No statement by her about arms transfers, weapons shipments, Foreign Military Financing, security assistance, a dollar figure, a condition on aid, or any bill on those subjects appears on her campaign site, in the two reported debates and forums of this race that she took part in, or in any news report about her campaign read for this card.
U.S. aid to Palestinians
- Nothing located, at any date. Neither UNRWA, nor Gaza humanitarian funding, nor the aid pipeline appears anywhere in her published material.
Characterization of the conflict
- Nothing located from her, at any date. The words Israel, Gaza, Palestinian, Hamas and Middle East appear nowhere on her campaign site or in her quoted remarks in any report read for this card.
- [Position, 2026-07-18] The Bradenton Times’ analysis of the Republican primary, by Mitch Maley, published July 18, 2026, closes by saying of Gruters, Eddie Speir and Ed Pope together that each is “generally supportive of President Trump’s agenda, and has hardline immigration positions (Speir’s is arguably the most hardline), while supporting the status quo regarding Israel, the Iran War, Cuba, and Venezuela.” The same piece says of Ed Pope, “Like Speir and Gruters, he is strongly pro-Israel.” Both sentences are the outlet’s own characterization of the field. Neither quotes Gruters, and the piece attributes no statement on this subject to her. It is recorded here and is not on the card: it is someone else’s description of her rather than anything she has said, and it describes three people at once.
Israel-related rhetoric and lobbying
- Nothing located from her, at any date. No statement by her about the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, about any other advocacy organization on this subject, or about money from any of them was found, and no pledge about their donations was found under her name.
- [Position, 2026-08-08] A Substack post by Steve Edward Farley, “The Red Flag Marriage: Sydney Gruters Won’t Disavow the Vote That Took Florida’s Guns”, reports that iVoterGuide sent Gruters its candidate questionnaire and that the published result for this district reads “did not answer” to every question, naming Israel among the subjects left blank. It also reports that she declined a League of Women Voters forum on July 9, 2026 and a Tiger Bay Club of Manatee County invitation. This is one writer’s account and only part of the post is readable without a subscription. The iVoterGuide questionnaire page it describes could not be opened here, so nothing from it is treated as established; the one item in it that could be checked independently, the declined Spectrum News forum, checks out. The address is above so that a reader can judge it.
Safety and antisemitism
- Nothing located, at any date. Nothing in her published material addresses antisemitism or the safety of any religious community.
What her campaign platform actually says
- [Undated; read 2026-09-07] Her campaign site is a single page under the heading “Conservative Priorities To Make America Great”, carrying six priorities with one sentence each: cost of living (“cut taxes and fight rising costs so working families can afford gas, groceries, and everyday essentials”), a secure border (“work with President Trump and ICE to keep our families safe from violent criminals entering our country illegally”), inflation, election security, housing costs (“curb overdevelopment and keep homeownership within reach”), and seniors and veterans. The same page carries her endorsements, a biography and a quotation from her about defending “our American way of life”. There is no issues page and no foreign policy of any kind. The site’s media page is an empty gallery.
Where she spoke, and what was asked
- [Position, 2026-07-31] WSLR’s report of the Republican Women’s Club of Sarasota debate, by Nic Steinig, published August 1, 2026. This was her first major public appearance of the campaign. WSLR was the only outlet permitted to record it. The questions put to the three candidates were: first priority in office; protection against voter fraud; coordinating with President Trump; a yes-or-no on endorsing the primary winner; and the affordable housing crisis. Gruters’ answers, quoted in full in the report, are about district casework (“Day one, my number one priority will be setting up my global district offices”), her donors, and a bill limiting investor purchases of starter homes. Nothing on foreign policy was asked or said.
- [Position, 2026-08-10] WSLR’s profile of her campaign, by Nic Steinig, published August 10, 2026. It reports her fundraising, her endorsements, her New College Foundation tenure and her post-debate interview with the station. Her quoted answers are about balancing the budget, inflation and her donor base. Nothing on this subject appears in it. The report also records President Trump’s Oval Office endorsement video of July 30, 2026, quoted there, which is about jobs, taxes, regulations and the economy.
- [Position, 2026-07-22] Spectrum News’ report of its Community Conversation with congressional candidates for this district, published July 22, 2026. Seven candidates took part and were asked about affordability, housing, Social Security and whether they would vote to authorize the war in Iran. The report states: “Sydney Gruters and Ed Pope are also running for the seat. They declined to join Wednesday's conversation.”
- [Read 2026-09-07] Her Ballotpedia page records that she has not completed Ballotpedia’s 2026 Candidate Connection survey. iVoterGuide’s Florida guide lists all three candidates in this race with a link to each campaign site and carries no questionnaire answers from her that could be read. Her BallotReady profile carries no issue statements.
Same surname, different person
- Her husband, Joe Gruters, is a Florida state senator and the chairman of the Republican National Committee, and a search on the surname returns his record before it returns hers. Nothing he has said, voted for or done is used anywhere on this card. Every source used here was checked to be about the candidate in Florida’s 16th District.
The race
- [Read 2026-09-07] Ballotpedia’s page for the 2026 election in Florida’s 16th District: “Kelly Kirschner, Sydney Gruters, and Mark Davis are running in the general election for U.S. House Florida District 16 on November 3, 2026.” The Republican primary on August 18, 2026 recorded 46,185 votes and 63.6 percent for Gruters against Eddie Speir and Ed Pope. There is no incumbent in the race; Vern Buchanan is retiring.
- [Position, 2026-08-18] WUSF’s report of the primary result and Tampa Bay 28’s both record the win and neither mentions Israel, Gaza or foreign aid. Tampa Bay 28 records that she held no public watch party and was not available for an interview that night.
Places that could not be read, so nothing is claimed from them
- The accounts her campaign site links to as hers: https://x.com/SydneyGrutersFL , https://www.instagram.com/sydneygrutersforcongress/ , https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61576458107829 and https://www.linkedin.com/company/sydney-gruters-for-congress/ . The X and Instagram pages opened but showed no readable posts, and the Facebook page returned nothing readable. Their addresses are printed rather than linked because they do not open here.
- Florida Politics, which publishes extensively on this race, refuses every reader we have. Two of its reports were offered to us: https://floridapolitics.com/archives/813805-sydney-gruters-wins-gop-nomination-in-race-to-succeed-vern-buchanan/ and https://floridapolitics.com/archives/812911-sydney-gruters-eddie-speir-ed-pope-offer-competing-visions-for-post-buchanan-cd-16/ . Nothing from either is used.

Not on the card, and why
- The whole of her platform on cost of living, the border, inflation, election security, housing and seniors and veterans, and her forty-odd endorsements: real positions and real facts, but not about U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, or about U.S. aid to Palestinians. They are listed above so the absence can be checked.
- The Bradenton Times’ description of the three Republican primary candidates as supporting the status quo regarding Israel, and its description of Ed Pope as strongly pro-Israel “like Speir and Gruters”. It is the outlet’s characterization of a field of three rather than anything Gruters said, and a statement about a group is not a statement by one person in it. It is quoted in full above.
- Eddie Speir’s remarks about political action committees and his pledge on money from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, reported by WSLR on July 4, 2026, which our research offered under her name. Those are another candidate’s words and belong on his own record. Gruters said nothing about them.
- The New College Foundation dispute reported by WSLR, and the campaign-finance reporting about her husband’s political committee. Out of scope: neither is about what the United States sends.
- Everything said or voted for by Joe Gruters. A different person.
- A Facebook post about a candidate named Jan Schneider was offered to us under Gruters’ name. It is about someone else, it does not open, and nothing from it is used.
