But What Can You Do? tracks where 2026 candidates stand on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. How we check

Sean McCann

How this mark works

We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). There an X also covers fully backing the conduct of the war by the government of Israel without significant reservations, and a question mark also covers speaking about Israel without saying clearly where they stand on U.S. weapons and funding. A dash means No Position Found: we found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.

See a dash? Ask the candidate where they stand, then send us their answer and we'll review it and update the mark. Or volunteer to help review candidates.

Two reviewers, reading the public record as a whole, agree: In an August 2026 news report he said he would "take a look at" continuing military aid later and is "very concerned about the Netanyahu government's conduct in Israel", without saying where he stands on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. Reviewed by hand on 2026-10-09. This candidate has no recorded tracked floor votes.

Asked in August 2026 whether he would vote to continue U.S. military aid to the government of Israel, McCann did not commit either way. He said he is "very concerned about the Netanyahu government's conduct" and that Congress must "hold the Netanyahu regime accountable for its actions."

Deep Dive

Sean McCann is a Democratic state senator from Southwest Michigan who represents the 19th District in the Michigan Senate, after serving as a Kalamazoo city commissioner and a state representative. He won the Democratic primary on August 4, 2026 and faces Rep. Bill Huizenga, the Republican incumbent, and Shafina Barnett of the Green Party on November 3.

His answer on U.S. military aid comes from a campaign press conference in Kalamazoo on August 28, 2026. Asked whether he would vote to continue military aid to Israel as a member of Congress, he did not commit either way: "That's something I would take a look at at the time, should I be elected to Congress in January, see what the lay of the land is at that time." In the same answer he said he is "very concerned about the Netanyahu government's conduct in Israel, conduct that's been supported by the Trump administration and a Congress that basically rubber-stamps Trump's foreign policy". He also said: "What we've got to do when we get there is put a microscope on the conduct of the foreign policy of the President and hold the Netanyahu regime accountable for its actions." WMUK reported that he was specifically concerned with the "loss of life and human suffering" associated with Israeli military action.

His campaign's issues page covers twelve subjects, from costs and health care to immigration and jobs, and none of them is Israel, Gaza or Palestinians. Nothing located has him speaking on U.S. aid to Palestinians.

Ask McCann how he would vote on continued U.S. weapons and money for the government of Israel, and where he stands on U.S. aid to Palestinians, and send us the reply: it goes on this page in his own words.

In their words

“That's something I would take a look at at the time, should I be elected to Congress in January, see what the lay of the land is at that time. I'm very concerned about the Netanyahu government's conduct in Israel, conduct that's been supported by the Trump administration and a Congress that basically rubber-stamps Trump's foreign policy — the same foreign policy that's gotten us into this war in Iran, expanded conflict in the Middle East, no closure or conclusion to the war in Ukraine”

Research log

The notes behind this card: what we looked at, what we found, and where each item came from.

Our research for this card began on 2026-08-11 and was brought up to date on 2026-09-25, when every page below was opened and read. Bands: Position (2024-01-26 onward), Reaction window (2023-10-07 to 2024-01-25), Earlier record (before 2023-10-07), Undated. McCann has never served in Congress, so none of the House votes this site tracks is his. The tracked funding totals are shown as badges on this card and are not restated here.

U.S. military aid and weapons to the government of Israel

  • [Position, 2026-08-28] WMUK's report of his campaign press conference in Kalamazoo, held at the offices of IBEW Local 131. The station reports that when asked whether he would vote to continue military aid to Israel as a member of Congress, he "stopped short of giving a definitive answer", and its summary line says he "hasn't yet decided his stance on continuing military aid to Israel." His answer as the station printed it: "That's something I would take a look at at the time, should I be elected to Congress in January, see what the lay of the land is at that time. I'm very concerned about the Netanyahu government's conduct in Israel, conduct that's been supported by the Trump administration and a Congress that basically rubber-stamps Trump's foreign policy — the same foreign policy that's gotten us into this war in Iran, expanded conflict in the Middle East, no closure or conclusion to the war in Ukraine". The report's next paragraph continues the quotation: "What we've got to do when we get there is put a microscope on the conduct of the foreign policy of the President and hold the Netanyahu regime accountable for its actions." It adds that he said he was specifically concerned with "loss of life and human suffering" associated with Israeli military action. The page's published time is 2026-08-28T21:33.
  • Nothing else located, at any date. His campaign site and its press releases from May to August 2026 say nothing about arms transfers, Foreign Military Financing or security assistance.

U.S. aid to Palestinians

  • Nothing located, at any date. UNRWA, Gaza humanitarian funding and aid to Palestinians do not appear in his campaign site, his press releases or the reporting read for this card. The issues page's one reference to foreign aid is about farmers: it says "The dismantling of USAID left many farmers in a tough spot with excess crops and nowhere to sell them."

Characterization of the conflict

  • [Position, 2026-08-28] The same WMUK report: he said he is "very concerned about the Netanyahu government's conduct in Israel", and the station reports his concern as the "loss of life and human suffering" associated with Israeli military action. No other description of the war by him was located.

Israel-related rhetoric and lobbying

  • Nothing located, at any date. No statement by him about the American Israel Public Affairs Committee or any other advocacy organization on this subject was found.

Safety and antisemitism

  • Nothing located, at any date.

What his campaign site and his own pages say

  • [Position, read 2026-09-25] His campaign's issues page is a letter from him followed by twelve sections: keeping costs low, health care, energy costs, water, air and land, the Constitution and democracy, farmers and rural communities, veterans, public education, the border and immigration, community safety, reproductive freedom, and jobs. None of them is about Israel, Gaza, Palestinians or U.S. military aid. The page carries no date and is recorded on the date we read it.
  • [Position, read 2026-09-25] His campaign's about page describes him as a Western Michigan University graduate who became a Kalamazoo City Commissioner, a State Representative and a State Senator in Southwest Michigan. His campaign's news page lists press releases from May 6 to August 28, 2026, on his opponent's record, polls, race ratings, endorsements, and his plans on taxes, costs and ethics. The August 28 release, his plan on ethics in government, was issued the day of the WMUK press conference and does not mention Israel.

The race

  • [Read 2026-09-25] Ballotpedia's page for the 2026 election in Michigan's 4th District records that incumbent Bill Huizenga (R), Sean McCann (D) and Shafina Barnett (G) are running in the general election on November 3, 2026, and that McCann defeated Diop Harris II in the Democratic primary on August 4, 2026.
  • [Position, 2026-08-05] Native News Online's report of his primary win describes him as a citizen of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation who has served as a Kalamazoo city commissioner and state representative and represents the 19th Senate District. It says his campaign has centered on Medicaid and health care, family costs, small businesses and abortion rights, and that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee put him on its Red to Blue list. It does not mention Israel.
  • [Read 2026-09-25] His Wikipedia article gives his service in the Michigan Senate (20th District, 2019 to 2023; 19th District, 2023 to present) and in the Michigan House (60th District, 2011 to 2014). It does not mention Israel.

Places that could not be read, so nothing is claimed from them

  • His campaign's accounts on Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube and Bluesky, linked from his campaign site, were not read for this card.

Not on the card, and why

  • The second half of his August 28 answer, which ties the Netanyahu government's conduct to "the same foreign policy that's gotten us into this war in Iran, expanded conflict in the Middle East, no closure or conclusion to the war in Ukraine". Iran and Ukraine are different questions from what the United States sends to the government of Israel. The clause is quoted in full above.
  • His ethics plan and his statements about his opponent's finances and votes, from the same press conference and his press releases: real positions, but not about U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, or about U.S. aid to Palestinians.
