But What Can You Do? tracks where 2026 candidates stand on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. How we check

How this mark works

We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). There an X also covers fully backing the conduct of the war by the government of Israel without significant reservations, and a question mark also covers speaking about Israel without saying clearly where they stand on U.S. weapons and funding. A dash means No Position Found: we found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.

See a dash? Ask the candidate where they stand, then send us their answer and we'll review it and update the mark. Or volunteer to help review candidates.

Braun, the state Senate Republican leader, wrote in a September 2024 op-ed that campuses must prevent antisemitic behavior and protect Jewish students’ religious practice. His reported June 2024 op-ed opposed state Democrats’ calls to end military aid to Israel as “going easy on Hamas”.

Deep Dive

Braun, the Washington State Senate minority leader, is the Republican challenger in the 3rd District after advancing from the top-two primary.

His verified writing is his September 2024 caucus-published commentary urging universities to prevent the return of antisemitic behavior, citing "illegal encampments" at three Washington campuses and defending Jewish students’ right "to freely practice their religion"; the same piece pushes back on applying "genocide" to Israel’s campaign, per our research’s account of the companion Daily Chronicle version.

His June 2024 Daily Chronicle op-ed, reportedly criticizing the state Democratic convention’s resolutions to end U.S. military aid to Israel as "going easy on Hamas" and accusing Democratic leaders of tolerating "undisguised antisemitism", sits behind the paper’s paywall; those quotes stay as reported, not confirmed directly. In April 2024 he condemned demonstrators blocking Sea-Tac airport access. He co-sponsored the state’s Holocaust and genocide education mandate; his October 2023 solidarity letters (urging the Israeli flag be flown at the state Capitol) and his January 2024 education-bill remarks are on the research page.

As a state legislator he casts no federal aid votes; his opposition to ending aid is a stated position, not a record. Ask Braun directly and send us the reply: it goes on this page in his own words.
