Andrea James
James's campaign calls on Massachusetts to "Rescind The Deal With Sheba Healthcare", an Israeli hospital system, and her platform's "NO WAR NO GENOCIDE" plank opposes "the genocide at the hands of the State of Israel". Nothing located from her addresses U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel.
James, a former criminal defense attorney who founded Families for Justice as Healing after her own time in prison, is running for governor as an unenrolled candidate against the incumbent, Maura Healey. Her campaign site carries a petition page, "Palestine For AJ", calling on the state to "Rescind The Deal With Sheba Healthcare". Sheba Medical Center, an Israeli hospital system outside Tel Aviv, announced in May 2025 that it would open a health-technology start-up accelerator in Greater Boston, and by March 2026 the accelerator was home to six start-ups. The petition page says the campaign remains "mindful of the devastating violence in Gaza over the past three years, rooted in a decades-long occupation", that "Hospitals in Gaza have been bombed repeatedly, killing patients and healthcare workers", and: "That is why we believe it is our responsibility to support Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against Israeli companies." It calls Sheba "deeply tied to the Israeli military".
Her platform lists "NO WAR NO GENOCIDE" among thirteen issue headings, beside housing, healthcare and a new women's prison. That page says the campaign "stands in opposition to the genocide at the hands of the State of Israel and inflicted upon the Palestinian people", opposes Massachusetts "welcoming companies from Israel that have funded the State of Israel to carry out the genocide of the Palestinian people", and says: "We oppose any restrictions on free speech concerning Israel/Palestine". Massachusetts Peace Action, a Cambridge-based peace advocacy group, endorsed her on June 3, 2026.
Those are her campaign's words on the conflict and on what the state should do. Nothing located from her addresses U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, or U.S. aid to Palestinians, questions a governor does not decide. You are better placed to change that than we are. Ask James directly and send us the reply: it goes on this page in her own words.
Research
One search was read as a lead list for this card, run 2026-09-04, and every page cited below was opened and read on 2026-09-05 unless marked otherwise. Bands: Position (2024-01-26 onward), Reaction window (2023-10-07 to 2024-01-25), Earlier record (before 2023-10-07), Undated. A Massachusetts governor casts no federal votes, so there is no vote record to restate. Her campaign's pages are undated and are recorded on the date they were read.
U.S. military aid and weapons to Israel
- Nothing located. No statement, interview answer, platform line or questionnaire response by Andrea James on U.S. military aid or weapons for the government of Israel was found. The lead list's queries were: "Andrea James" questionnaire "military aid"; "Andrea James" governor Massachusetts 2026; "Andrea James" "antisemitism"; "Andrea James" Israel Massachusetts; "Andrea James" Gaza Massachusetts. Two further searches on 2026-09-05, for her name with Sheba, Israel, Gaza, Palestine, genocide, interview, forum and debate, returned her own site, the two endorsements below and pages about the Sheba accelerator that do not name her.
- [Position, read 2026-09-05] Her platform page has thirteen issue headings: Housing Affordability, Universal Healthcare, Universal Childcare, Education, Immigration Protection, Lowering Utility Costs, Labor Rights, LGBTQ+ Protections, Climate and Clean Energy, AI and Data Centers, No New Women's Prison, No War No Genocide, and Justice and Freedom. The "NO WAR NO GENOCIDE" and "Palestine For AJ" pages (below) speak about the State of Israel, Israeli companies and state policy; neither says anything about what the United States should send. The homepage, Meet Andrea, Media and Voter Information pages were also read: nothing on the subject.
- [Position, 2026-01-05] WBUR's report of her planned run (Chris Van Buskirk) covers her biography, her switch from a Democratic filing to an independent run, and her incarceration-reform work. Nothing on the subject.
- [Position, read 2026-09-05] Ballotpedia lists her as unenrolled and records that she has not completed its 2026 Candidate Connection survey.
U.S. aid to Palestinians
- Nothing located on UNRWA, Gaza humanitarian funding or the aid pipeline.
Characterization of the conflict
- [Position, read 2026-09-05] The "NO WAR NO GENOCIDE" page on her campaign site (its on-page heading reads "NO WAR NO, NO GENOCIDE"): "Our campaign stands in opposition to the genocide at the hands of the State of Israel and inflicted upon the Palestinian people." "Our campaign believes that Israel should be held accountable for its actions, and we stand in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom." Quoted on the card with attribution; the site does not adopt the words.
- [Position, read 2026-09-05] The "Palestine For AJ" petition page, footer "Paid for by the Committee To Elect Andrea James": "As we organize here in Massachusetts, we remain mindful of the devastating violence in Gaza over the past three years, rooted in a decades-long occupation." "Hospitals in Gaza have been bombed repeatedly, killing patients and healthcare workers." The page is not linked from the site's main navigation.
- [Position, 2026-04-19] The Independent Socialist Group's endorsement says of her: "She opposes the ongoing genocide of Palestinians and the state terror of ICE." The group's words about her, not hers; the same page quotes her on healthcare, schools, wages and childcare from a Boston.com interview, none of it on this subject. Research page only.
- [Position, 2026-06-03] Massachusetts Peace Action's endorsement (Brian Garvey): "MAPA appreciates Andrea James’ willingness to speak directly about the connections between economic inequality, mass incarceration, militarism, genocide, war, and the concentration of political and corporate power." A third party describing her; the endorsement is a fact and is on the card, the description is not.
Related rhetoric and lobbying
- [Position, read 2026-09-05] State action: the petition page is headed "Massachusetts must Rescind The Deal With Sheba Healthcare" and says: "That is why we believe it is our responsibility to support Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against Israeli companies. Sheba, in particular, is deeply tied to the Israeli military, providing care to the soldiers carrying out this occupation and violence." Sheba Medical Center is an Israeli hospital system outside Tel Aviv; the Boston Globe reported on 2025-05-07 that it would open an "ARC Accelerator" for digital and AI health start-ups in Greater Boston, and State House News reported on 2026-03-06 that ARC Landing Boston was by then home to six start-ups. The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (2025-05-12) describes the May 2025 State House welcome for Sheba's leadership.
- [Position, read 2026-09-05] The "NO WAR NO GENOCIDE" page: "Our campaign stands in opposition to welcoming companies from Israel that have funded the State of Israel to carry out the genocide of the Palestinian people, to do business in Massachusetts." "We oppose any restrictions on free speech concerning Israel/Palestine and the targeting of politicians, organizations, academics, students, businesses, or individuals who dissent from one-sided pro-Israel policies." The page also says the campaign supports street and campus protests and joins boycott campaigns "to put pressure on Israel".
- Nothing located on lobbying organizations, endorsements sought or refused from them, or anti-boycott legislation.
Safety and antisemitism (context, not a position on what America sends)
- Nothing located from James. The two endorsement pages above also discuss the incumbent governor's positions, including on the state's antisemitism commission; that material belongs to the incumbent's record and is not repeated here.
Earlier finding, preserved
- Checked 2026-07-18: "checked campaign site and news; no stance found on sending weapons/money to Israel." True of the pages read then; the two campaign pages quoted above were found by the 2026-09-04 search.
Not on the card, and why
- The boycott sentence is in the deep dive and here, not on the front: the front carries the state action and the characterization, and a boycott statement is rhetoric, not a position on what the United States sends.
- The Independent Socialist Group's and Massachusetts Peace Action's descriptions of her: third parties speaking about her; research page only. The fact of the Peace Action endorsement is in the deep dive.
- Both endorsement pages' passages about the incumbent: another candidate's record; off this card.
- Sheba Out of MA (an advocacy campaign) and the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine blog: neither page names James; read for the Sheba background only, and not cited on the card. The neutral descriptions above come from the Boston Globe, State House News and the state's life sciences agency.
- The card leads with her state-level action and her campaign's own words because a governor does not decide U.S. weapons or money; the federal sentence closes the front.
