Deep Dive

Lynch, a Democrat from South Boston and a former ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, is seeking a 12th term in the 8th District. He won the September 1, 2026 primary over Patrick Roath and faces Republican Robert Burke in November.

Through 2024 he pressed the Biden administration on how the government of Israel was using U.S. weapons. On April 16, 2024 he was one of 26 House Democrats on a letter led by Reps. Veronica Escobar and Joaquin Castro that questioned the State Department’s acceptance of the Israeli government’s assurances that it was using U.S.-origin weapons “in full compliance with relevant U.S. and international law”. On May 2, 2024 he signed a letter of more than 50 House members urging the administration to “immediately withhold certain offensive military aid to the Israeli government” to preempt a full-scale assault on Rafah. In June he told Newsweek he was “inclined not to attend” Prime Minister Netanyahu’s address to Congress, and on July 25, 2024 he skipped it. In a statement reported by the Dorchester Reporter he called the visit “a political ploy to use our House Chamber as a backdrop to strengthen his weakened political position back in Israel” and said that, having visited Gaza on multiple occasions, he believed “Netanyahu’s relentless attacks on innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza, including unthinkable numbers of women and children, are clearly intentional and could be fairly judged to be war crimes.” He described himself as “a longtime supporter of the state of Israel, her security, and of the Jewish people” and added: “I continue to call for the release of the hostages, the defeat of Hamas (who use their own people as human shields), and the search for a peaceful way forward.”

In 2025 and 2026 he moved to conditions and limits. On February 13, 2025 he was among 144 House Democrats who called a president’s proposal to forcibly remove two million people from Gaza “morally indefensible” and a violation of the Geneva Convention. On June 4, 2025 he was an original cosponsor of a resolution urging the administration to use every diplomatic tool to get humanitarian aid into Gaza and bring the hostages home. On June 11, 2026 he became a cosponsor of the Block the Bombs Act, whose title is a limitation on the transfer of defense articles and defense services to Israel. On July 15, 2026 he signed a statement of 27 members that said “we do not support providing an additional $3.3 billion of American taxpayer dollars to be used for Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon” and “It is clear that existing human rights conditions on the use of American security assistance have not been meaningfully enforced. Enough is enough.” The statement added that the signers remained committed to programs such as the Nita M. Lowey Middle East Partnership for Peace Act. The next day he wrote on X that he had voted yes on the amendment “to halt an additional $3.3 billion in taxpayer funding for Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon.” On August 3, 2026 he cosponsored the Ceasefire Compliance Act, a bill to bar U.S. weapons if the government of Israel violates the Gaza ceasefire, as Haaretz described it. Three days later he signed a letter of the Massachusetts delegation urging the administration to end settler violence and settlement expansion in the West Bank, restore sanctions on violent settlers and investigate the deaths of nine Americans killed there.

On antisemitism, he signed the March 2026 letter of 150 members requesting $1 billion for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which funds security at houses of worship, and in July 2025 he and Rep. Robert Garcia wrote to the General Services Administration demanding answers on its work with the AI tool Grok, which FedScoop noted had recently produced antisemitic content. He has been to Gaza several times; leading a congressional delegation there in April 2009, he said “this is really a humanitarian crisis” and that the U.S. and others should “move quickly to provide relief.”
