But What Can You Do? tracks where 2026 candidates stand on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. How we check
Nick Sheedy
Libertarian · U.S. House, Montana District 1
–No Position Found
How this mark works
We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). There an X also covers fully backing the conduct of the war by the government of Israel without significant reservations, and a question mark also covers speaking about Israel without saying clearly where they stand on U.S. weapons and funding. A dash means No Position Found: we found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.
No recorded votes on the bills we track. We found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.
Nothing located as of October 2026 has Sheedy taking a position on U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, or on U.S. aid to Palestinians. His questionnaire answers to Montana Free Press cover war powers, rural health care, campaign money and the Federal Reserve.

Nick Sheedy is the Libertarian candidate in Montana's 1st District, the western district, which is open because Representative Ryan Zinke did not run again. He won the Libertarian nomination unopposed and is on the November 3, 2026 ballot with Sam Forstag, the Democrat, and Aaron Flint, the Republican. The Montana Libertarian Party endorsed him at its convention in April 2026.
This is an empty record on these questions rather than a thin one. He has no campaign website that could be found, and he has not answered Ballotpedia's candidate questionnaire. He did answer all five questions in the Montana Free Press election guide, and none of his answers mentions Israel, Gaza or foreign aid. Asked about war powers, he wrote that the War Powers Resolution should be strengthened so that a president cannot go to war without Congress declaring it, and that National Guard members should not be deployed for foreign wars except for the purposes the Constitution states. He named no country. His other answers are about rural health care, money in elections, the Federal Reserve and his independence from party leadership. An empty record carries no implication either way.
You are better placed to change this than we are. Ask Sheedy directly, or at a candidate forum, and send us the reply: it goes on this page in his own words, which is worth more than anything we could write about him.

What the campaign site and own pages say
No campaign website was found. His Ballotpedia page lists only a personal Facebook page and a LinkedIn profile, and says he has not yet completed its 2026 candidate questionnaire.
[Position, March 2026; read 2026-10-01] The Montana Free Press election guide carries his answers to a written questionnaire the newsroom conducted in March 2026, limited to 1,000 characters each and published unedited. He answered all five questions. On war powers: "The War Powers Resolution of 1973 should be strengthened so that the President cannot engage in war without Congress declaring war, as prescribed by the US Constitution." He added that he would reform the National Guard so that guardsmen are not called into federal service or deployed for foreign wars except for the purposes the Constitution states. On rural health care, he wrote that he is not sure the federal government has or should have a significant role beyond veterans' facilities and that Congress should lower the regulatory burden. On issues unique to Montana, he proposed federal laws to reverse two Supreme Court decisions on campaign money. On home ownership and the cost of living, he called for ending the Federal Reserve. On what would distinguish him: "As a Libertarian, I am not beholden to my party or my party leadership." No answer names Israel, Gaza or any other country. The guide dates the questionnaire to March 2026 and gives no day.
[Read 2026-10-01] His Ballotpedia page: "Sam Forstag (D), Aaron Flint (R), and Nick Sheedy (L) are running in the general election for U.S. House Montana District 1 on November 3, 2026." Forstag and Flint won their primaries on June 2, 2026. The page's summary of the race also names Kimberly Persico, an independent, whom its results section lists as withdrawn or disqualified, and it says Representative Ryan Zinke did not run for re-election.
[Read 2026-10-01] Two sources differ on how he was nominated. Ballotpedia says the Libertarian primary scheduled for June 2, 2026 was canceled and he advanced without appearing on the ballot; the Montana Free Press guide shows him with 1,202 votes, 100 percent, in the June 2 Libertarian primary, as counted by the Secretary of State. Both agree he was unopposed.
[Position, 2026-03-18] A Montana Free Press report on the state's Libertarians quotes him on public lands: "I would like to see other candidates commit to better management of our public lands to improve multiple use, public access, and productive stewardship of our vast and valuable natural resources," he said. The same report describes Libertarians in general: "They have argued for decades that U.S. military and economic aid to Israel makes America complicit in Israel’s actions in Gaza, violating Libertarianism’s non-aggression agenda." That sentence is the reporter's description of the party's members as a group. It does not name him, and it is not his position.
[Position, 2026-05-08] KXLF's primary preview says "Libertarian Nick Sheedy will be on the general election ballot" in the 1st District, and that the independent Kimberly Persico was seeking to qualify. It quotes nothing from him.
Places that could not be read, so nothing is claimed from them
Not read for this card: his personal Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/nickolas.sheedy , and his LinkedIn profile, https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-sheedy-genealogist/ , both listed on Ballotpedia.
Not on the card, and why
His answers on rural health care, campaign money, the Federal Reserve and party independence, and his comments on public lands: out of scope, listed above so the absence is checkable.
The Montana Free Press description of Libertarians' long opposition to aid to Israel: about the party's members as a group, not about him.
A list of positions on foreign aid and proxy wars on the Montana Libertarian Party's website that our research attached to him: it describes a different candidate, a Republican in a 2024 primary, and is not about him.
