How this mark works
We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). That was the word from Montana's US Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) who joined me from Capitol Hill earlier this week." The call is the senator's, and it concerns campus antisemitism, not Israel or U.S. aid.
Questionnaires
[Questionnaire, 2026 Republican primary] His iVoterGuide profile records "Did not answer" against all 32 of its questions, one of them "Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?" That shows the guide was never filled in, not a choice about Israel.
[Questionnaire, March 2026] The Montana Free Press election guide carries his answers to a written questionnaire "conducted by Montana Free Press in March 2026". On war powers he wrote: "Everyone is sick of forever wars in the Middle East. I fought in Iraq and Afghanistan and I know what it means to be stuck in a nation-building quagmire with no clear end in sight." The answer goes on to the war with Iran and does not mention Israel.
His campaign site, its issues page and its about page, read 2026-09-26, cover housing, jobs, public lands and pledges on congressional pay and budgets, and his military and radio career. Nothing on Israel, Gaza or U.S. aid.
The race
He won the Republican primary on June 2, 2026 over Christi Jacobsen, Albert Olszewski and Ray Curtis. The general election on November 3, 2026 lists Sam Forstag (D), Aaron Flint (R) and Nick Sheedy (L). The seat is open because Representative Ryan Zinke did not seek re-election, per Montana Free Press. He has held no office, so there are no recorded votes on this card.
