But What Can You Do? tracks where 2026 candidates stand on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. How we check

Aaron Guckian

Republican · Governor, Rhode Island
–
How this mark works

We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). There an X also covers fully backing the conduct of the war by the government of Israel without significant reservations, and a question mark also covers speaking about Israel without saying clearly where they stand on U.S. weapons and funding. A dash means No Position Found: we found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.

See a dash? Ask the candidate where they stand, then send us their answer and we'll review it and update the mark. Or volunteer to help review candidates.

No recorded votes on the bills we track. We found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.

Guckian won the Republican primary on September 9 and says he is running a Rhode Island first campaign. Nothing located as of September 2026 has him taking a position on U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, or on U.S. aid to Palestinians.

Deep Dive

Aaron Guckian is the Republican nominee for governor of Rhode Island. He was a public school music teacher in North Kingstown, spent two terms as a special assistant to Governor Donald Carcieri, worked in banking, and most recently led the Rhode Island Dental Association; he was the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor in 2022 and lost that race. On September 9, 2026 he won the Republican primary by 259 votes over Elaine Pelino, and the Board of Elections certified the result on September 15 after re-reading the machines' memory devices. He is running on affordability, health care, education, taxes and fees, and accountability in state government.

When he has been asked about national politics, he has said the campaign is not about them. Announcing his run in November 2025, asked whether he saw the president as a plus or a minus, he answered, "My focus is on Rhode Island, not Washington, DC." Asked separately whether he would invite the president to campaign for him, he said, "I am running a Rhode Island first campaign." In a long interview a week before the primary he said, "I'm really here running for the state of Rhode Island on the big top issues, which is fees, taxes, traffic, education." The one federal subject he named in that interview was border security.

On the question this site asks, the record is empty rather than thin. His campaign site was read in full, including the file the site loads to build every page of itself, and the words Israel, Gaza, Palestinian, Hamas and foreign aid appear nowhere in it. Neither does foreign policy. Ballotpedia's page for him carries no answers to its candidate questionnaire, and the campaign platform it reproduces from his 2022 run reaches no foreign subject either. An empty record carries no implication either way, and a governor casts no federal votes on any of this.

His campaign's own accounts hold more of his words than anything that could be read here, and what they serve to a signed-out reader is on his research page, along with the addresses. You are better placed to change this than we are. Ask Guckian directly, or at a candidate forum, and send us the reply: it goes on this page in his own words, which is worth more than anything we could write about him.

Research log

The notes behind this card: what we looked at, what we found, and where each item came from.

Every page named below was opened and read on 2026-09-20 unless the entry says otherwise. His campaign site was read in full, including the application file the site loads to render its pages, which is where all of its text lives. Bands: Position (2024-01-26 onward), Reaction window (2023-10-07 to 2024-01-25), Earlier record (before 2023-10-07), Undated. He has never held elected office, so there is no voting record on this card, and the committees this site tracks do not cover a state office, so there is no funding record either.

U.S. military aid and weapons to the government of Israel

  • Nothing located, at any date. No statement of his about arms transfers, weapons shipments, Foreign Military Financing, the memorandum of understanding, security assistance, a dollar figure, a condition on aid, or any bill or amendment on those subjects appears on his campaign site, on his Ballotpedia page, in his announcement interview, in the long interview he gave a week before the primary, or in any report of his campaign read for this card.

U.S. aid to Palestinians

  • Nothing located, at any date. Neither the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, nor humanitarian funding for Gaza, nor the aid pipeline appears anywhere in his published material.

Characterization of the conflict

  • Nothing located, at any date. He has not been found using the words genocide, apartheid, self-defense or terrorism about the war in Gaza, and nothing of his was found on Palestinian statehood, a two-state framework or territorial boundaries. A case-insensitive search of the whole of his campaign site, including the application file that carries all of its text, and of his Ballotpedia page, returns no match for israel, gaza, palestin, hamas, antisemit, zionis, aipac, unrwa, foreign aid, foreign policy, military aid, middle east, netanyahu, two-state, genocide, weapon or arms sale.

Related rhetoric and lobbying

  • Nothing located, at any date. Nothing that could be read here has him naming the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, any other advocacy organization working on this subject, or money connected to any of them.
  • [Position, 2025-11-30] The nearest thing to a statement about Washington is a refusal to make the race about it. In a question-and-answer published with GoLocalProv's report of his candidacy, asked "Do you see President Trump as a plus or a minus?", he answered: "I agree with some things and disagree with others. My focus is on Rhode Island, not Washington, DC." Asked separately whether he would ask the president to come to Rhode Island to campaign for him, he answered: "I am running a Rhode Island first campaign. I don't plan on bringing in national political figures at this time." Asked for his top priorities, he answered: "Affordability, healthcare, education, lowering taxes/fees, and providing a competent, reliable state government." These are two separate answers to two separate questions and are not joined here.

Safety and antisemitism (context, not a position on what America sends)

  • [Undated, read 2026-09-20] His campaign account on X carries a holiday greeting: "Wishing a happy and peaceful Rosh Hashanah to Rhode Island's Jewish community and all who are celebrating. May the New Year bring health, happiness, peace, and hope." The post tags the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, the state's Jewish federation. The account serves no date with it to a reader who is not signed in, so no date is claimed. It is a greeting, not a statement about the war or about what the United States sends or funds, and nothing is read into it on the card.

What the campaign site and his own pages say

  • [Position, read 2026-09-20] His campaign site is built as a single application, so a plain reading of its address returns an empty frame. The file the site loads to build itself was read instead, and it carries the whole of the site's text. Its routes are the home page, a blog listing, a privacy policy and terms of use. The platform on it has five parts: lowering the cost of living, including housing, utilities and health costs; public schools, teacher support and career-ready pathways including vocational and technical training; the shortage of primary care physicians, dentists and other providers; targeted tax relief and reducing fees; and transparency and accountability in state spending. The site's own summary of him reads that he "is running for Governor to make Rhode Island more affordable, efficient, and full of opportunity for working families." No country other than the United States is named anywhere in it.
  • [Position, 2026-08-31] NBC 10's interview with him, by Brian Crandall, published August 31, 2026, is the longest account of his positions located. It covers taxes and fees, speed cameras, electricity bills, the state budget, truck tolls, a proposed millionaire's tax, gun laws, abortion and labor unions. On national politics he said: "I'm a Rhode Island Republican. I support the Constitution. I'm running just for the reasons that are affecting Rhode Islanders. We have Washington, you know, I support the president. I voted for the president, in regards to border security." He then said, in a separate sentence the report sets off on its own: "But I'm really here running for the state of Rhode Island on the big top issues, which is fees, taxes, traffic, education." Border security is the only federal subject he names anywhere in it, and it is not the subject of this site.
  • [Read 2026-09-20] Ballotpedia's page for him records that he has not completed its Candidate Connection survey for 2026, and did not complete the 2022 one either. It reproduces his 2022 campaign website in full: a constituent help center, small business, elder care, health care and emergency management. No foreign subject appears in it. The page gives his career as a development officer at the Rhode Island Foundation, previously a vice president at Bank Newport, an officer at The Washington Trust Company and a special assistant to former Governor Donald Carcieri, and records his 2022 loss to Sabina Matos, 51.2 percent to 43.1 percent.

The race

  • [Read 2026-09-20] The general election for governor of Rhode Island is on November 3, 2026. Ballotpedia's page for the race gives the field: "Helena Foulkes (D), Aaron Guckian (R), Ken Block (Independent), Jasjit Gotra (Independent), and Christopher Reynolds (Independent) are running in the general election for Governor of Rhode Island on November 3, 2026." The same page notes that its candidate list may not be complete, and lists Julian J. Smith (Independent) among withdrawn or disqualified candidates.
  • [Read 2026-09-20] The primaries were held on September 9, 2026. Ballotpedia's tables read: Republican primary, Aaron Guckian 50.6 percent and 11,691 votes, Elaine Pelino 49.4 percent and 11,432, out of 23,123 cast; Democratic primary, Helena Foulkes 62.3 percent and 75,654 votes, incumbent Daniel McKee 37.7 percent and 45,700, out of 121,354 cast.
  • [Read 2026-09-20] The results were certified on September 15, 2026. NBC 10 reported that the Board of Elections re-read the electronic data stored on election night memory devices in the Republican race for governor, that there was no change, and that "Guckian was the winner, the Board of Elections said in certifying the results." Pelino, who trailed by 259 votes, did not meet the threshold for the ballots themselves to be run through the machines again. Election Desk's account of the same meeting records that the board certified that race "along with the rest of the state's September 9 primary results", and gives the same certified margin.
  • [Read 2026-09-20] Daniel McKee, the incumbent governor, lost the Democratic primary and is not on the November ballot. He is the only candidate in this race with a published card at this site, and his record is not narrated here.
  • The other candidates' records belong on their own cards and are not narrated here.

Places that could not be read, so nothing is claimed from them

  • The blog listing on his own campaign site. The site builds that page from material served at https://aaron-api.xpoll.io , an address that does not resolve from here; it was tried twice. Whatever his campaign has posted there could not be read, and the page itself returns nothing to a reader without the application. This is the one part of his own site that could not be checked.
  • His campaign's accounts. https://x.com/GuckianRI opens far enough to show his profile line and a handful of posts, about the primary result, his family, a baseball game and the holiday greeting recorded above; the rest asks a reader to sign in, and no other subject appears in what is served. https://www.facebook.com/AaronGuckianForGovernor returns an error to every request. His campaign also lists an Instagram account and a LinkedIn page. None of these was read in full and nothing is claimed from any of them.
  • Rhode Island Current's 2026 primary voter guide for this office, at https://rhodeislandcurrent.com/voter-guides/contests/2026-primary-governor/ , refuses every request made here and could not be opened. A voter guide is the kind of place a question like this one gets asked, so it is named here for anyone who can open it.
  • NBC 10's filmed interview with him about the proposed millionaire's tax, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4M9M1-6EDI , was not watched here and nothing is claimed from it.

Not on the card, and why

  • His whole platform: affordability and the cost of living, housing, utility and electricity bills, health care and the shortage of providers, schools and vocational training, taxes and fees, speed cameras, truck tolls, the state budget and accountability in state government. Out of scope, and listed above so the absence can be checked.
  • His answer about the president and border security. Border security is not about what the United States sends to the government of Israel or to Palestinians, and it is not the subject of this site. Recorded above with its date and address.
  • His positions on gun laws, abortion and labor unions. Out of scope.
  • The holiday greeting on his campaign account. It is a greeting to a community, not a statement about the war or about what America sends, and the account serves no date with it. Recorded above as what it is.
  • His 2022 campaign for lieutenant governor and the platform from that race. On the record above, and it reaches no foreign subject.
  • The records of the other candidates on the November ballot. Another candidate's positions belong on that candidate's own card.
