But What Can You Do? tracks where 2026 candidates stand on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. How we check

How this mark works

We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). There an X also covers fully backing the conduct of the war by the government of Israel without significant reservations, and a question mark also covers speaking about Israel without saying clearly where they stand on U.S. weapons and funding. A dash means No Position Found: we found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.

See a dash? Ask the candidate where they stand, then send us their answer and we'll review it and update the mark. Or volunteer to help review candidates.

No recorded votes on the bills we track. We have not finished reviewing this candidate's public record yet.

Roy, a Stowe teenager who founded the Freedom and Unity Party, campaigns on affordable housing, scrapping Act 250 and capping personal wealth at $1 billion. Nothing located has him taking a position on U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, or on U.S. aid to Palestinians.

Deep Dive

Dean Roy is a high school student from Stowe and the candidate for governor of the Freedom and Unity Party, which he founded. After serving as a legislative page at the Statehouse, he became the first candidate for governor under 18 to reach Vermont's general-election ballot, which the state constitution allows because it sets no minimum age for the office. On November 3 he faces Governor Phil Scott, the Republican; Amanda Janoo, the Democrat; June Goodband of the Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party; and Brian Judd, an independent.

His campaign is about the state. His site describes "anti authoritarian, left wing politics": a statewide ban on license-plate readers and facial recognition, a wealth tax and a $1 billion cap on net worth, a public health option for people earning under $100,000 and later universal health care, scrapping Act 250, building homes for under $150,000 with money from taxes on short-term rentals and second homes, a nuclear power plant, and workers' right to unionize. It opposes the governor's electric vehicle mandate and promises that the National Guard and state agencies will not work with the federal government against Vermonters. He has called housing the most important issue facing the state.

On the question this site asks, the record is empty rather than thin. Nothing located, at any date, has him taking a position on U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel, or on U.S. aid to Palestinians, or saying anything about the war in Gaza. The words Israel, Gaza and Palestinian appear nowhere on his campaign site, in the Associated Press report on his candidacy or in a 2025 VTDigger profile of him. A governor casts no federal votes on any of this. An empty record carries no implication either way.

His campaign's Instagram and TikTok accounts, a 2025 video interview and a school newspaper profile could not be read or watched here. The addresses are on his research page.

You are better placed to change this than we are. Ask Roy directly, or at a candidate forum, and send us the reply: it goes on this page in his own words, which is worth more than anything we could write about him.

The notes behind this card: what we looked at, what we found, and where each item came from.

Every page named below was opened and read on 2026-10-05 unless the entry says otherwise. His campaign site is built with a page-design tool that shows a plain reader only the word "Home"; its full text was read from the page's own embedded content. Bands: Position (2024-01-26 onward), Reaction window (2023-10-07 to 2024-01-25), Earlier record (before 2023-10-07), Undated. Roy has not held federal office, so none of the congressional votes this site tracks is his; the federal funding badges do not apply to a state office.

What the campaign site and own pages say

  • [Position, read 2026-10-05] His campaign site, "Dean Roy For Governor", says he is "running to become the youngest governor in the United States" with the Freedom and Unity Party, "which he independently founded" in 2025. It says he wants "to bring anti authoritarian, left wing politics" to Vermont: "a radical state wide ban on ALPRs and facial recognition technology" and on Flock cameras; a wealth tax and "capping networth to 1 billion dollars in Vermont"; a public option for those earning less than $100,000, funded by taxes on the wealthiest, and later universal health care; scrapping Act 250; affordable homes for under $150,000, about 314 a year, paid for from existing housing money and a higher tax on short-term rentals and second homes; higher corporate taxes and water-extraction fees on bottling companies and data centers to cut property taxes; a nuclear power plant; workers' right to unionize and workplace democracy; and "No new restrictions on personal freedom", naming digital freedoms, firearm rights, LGBT+ rights, minority rights, abortion rights and rural traditions. It opposes "Scott’s EV mandate" and promises protection from "the increasing authoritarian federal government" and from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying the National Guard and other state agencies will never work with the federal government to harm Vermonters. Nothing on this subject. The site carries no date and is recorded on the date we read it.

The race

  • [Position, 2026-03-27] The Associated Press report, as carried by Courthouse News (also in the Los Angeles Times) says he will be the first candidate for governor under 18 on Vermont's general-election ballot, that he secured his place "by creating his own third party", that the state constitution sets no minimum age, that he was a legislative page, that he does not identify with either major party, and that he "said housing is the most important issue facing the state." Nothing on this subject.
  • [Earlier campaign coverage, 2025-07-20] VTDigger's profile, published when he was collecting signatures, says his campaign "is centered around affordability and rising property taxes", that he leaned conservative on finances, supported abortion rights and opposed the treatment of immigrants, and quotes him: "This country needs immigration reform badly". It says the Freedom and Unity Party "emerged in Vermont around 2022", which differs from his site's account that he founded it in 2025. Nothing on this subject.
  • [Read 2026-10-05] His Ballotpedia page records that Phil Scott (R), the incumbent, Amanda Janoo (D), Dean Roy (Freedom and Unity Party), June Goodband (Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party of Vermont) and Brian Judd (Independent) are running in the general election for Governor of Vermont on November 3, 2026. He has not completed Ballotpedia's 2026 survey.
  • [Read 2026-10-05] The Secretary of State's 2026 general election candidate list gives his ballot line as "DEAN ROY", town "STOWE", party "FREEDOM AND UNITY", with the website "DEANROYFORGOVERNOR.MY.CANVA.SITE".

  • A profile in the Dana Hall School's student newspaper, https://hallmanac.danahall.org/meet-dean-roy-the-14-year-old-running-for-governor-of-vermont/ . It returned "403 - Forbidden" (access refused) and was not read.

Not on the card, and why

  • His state platform in detail: out of scope, summarized above so the absence can be checked.
  • His age and the debate over Vermont's age rules for governor: about his eligibility, not about this question.
