But What Can You Do? tracks where 2026 candidates stand on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. How we check

William B. Redpath

Libertarian · U.S. Senate, Ohio
?
How this mark works

We track key votes on sending U.S. weapons and money to the government of Israel. A check means every tracked vote they cast came down against sending more, on the side of peace and de-escalation. A question mark means a mixed record: they sided with sending up to half of the time. An X means they voted to send more weapons and money in over half of their tracked votes, even as the way those weapons and dollars were being used became more and more obvious. At exactly half, money this election cycle from a lobbying group we track, or an endorsement from a group that backs sending weapons, makes it an X. Only votes actually cast are counted. Where a candidate has no recorded votes on these bills, the mark comes instead from a reviewed reading of their public record (money from the lobbying groups we track, endorsements, and their own words since January 26, 2024). There an X also covers fully backing the conduct of the war by the government of Israel without significant reservations, and a question mark also covers speaking about Israel without saying clearly where they stand on U.S. weapons and funding. A dash means No Position Found: we found nothing in their own words about Israel, Gaza or the war.

See a dash? Ask the candidate where they stand, then send us their answer and we'll review it and update the mark. Or volunteer to help review candidates.

Two reviewers, reading the public record as a whole, agree: On his campaign site he says "The United States’ “special relationship” with Israel should end" and "We should treat Israel like any other allied nation", without saying where he stands on U.S. weapons and funding for the government of Israel. Reviewed by hand on 2026-10-09. This candidate has no recorded tracked floor votes.

Redpath, the Libertarian nominee, writes on his campaign site that "The United States’ “special relationship” with Israel should end. We should treat Israel like any other allied nation." Nothing located has him saying what that would mean for U.S. weapons or money for the government of Israel.

Deep Dive

Bill Redpath, of Perrysburg, is the Libertarian Party's nominee in the November 3, 2026 special election for the Senate seat Jon Husted has held by appointment since January 2025. He was born and raised in Findlay, spent 38 years in business valuation, and chaired the Libertarian National Committee from 2006 to 2010. He has run for office as a Libertarian many times before, first in Virginia and later in Illinois, where he was the party's Senate nominee in 2022. He faces Husted, the Republican, Sherrod Brown, the Democrat, and Gregory Levy, an independent, with three write-in candidates. He has never held office, so there are no Senate votes on this record.

His campaign site states the position in three sentences, under a heading about the war with Iran: "The United States should treat the Middle East with benign neglect. The United States’ “special relationship” with Israel should end. We should treat Israel like any other allied nation." He gave the same answer to the Akron Area League of Women Voters guide that Signal Akron published in April 2026, where he wrote that "The “special relationship” with the government of Israel only leads the US into problems." Asked by iVoterGuide in 2026 whether the U.S. relationship with Israel is important, he answered that the "special relationship" with Israel "is a burden to the United States and it should be ended." In the League of Women Voters guide he also calls for a non-interventionist foreign policy, using force only when the U.S. homeland or territories are threatened, and says that "would allow us to cut the Defense budget."

None of these answers mentions weapons, military aid or any spending bill, and nothing located has him speaking to U.S. aid to Palestinians or to how he would describe the war in Gaza. His earlier record, including a 2020 questionnaire answer on boycotts of Israel, is on his research page. You are better placed to ask him than we are: ask Redpath what ending the special relationship would mean for U.S. weapons and money for the government of Israel, and send us the reply. It goes on this page in his own words.

Research log

The notes behind this card: what we looked at, what we found, and where each item came from.

Every page named below was opened and read on 2026-10-05 unless the entry says otherwise. His campaign site was read in full: the home page, the about page, the issues page headed "What I Stand For", the media page and the videos page, and the site's own search was run for Israel, Gaza, Palestinian, AIPAC and Middle East. Bands: Position (2024-01-26 onward), Reaction window (2023-10-07 to 2024-01-25), Earlier record (before 2023-10-07), Undated. Undated pages are recorded on the date we read them. Redpath has never held office, so none of the Senate votes this site tracks is his, and no funding from the committees this site tracks is recorded on this record. Nothing located on this subject falls in the reaction window.

U.S. military aid and weapons to the government of Israel

  • Nothing located, at any date, that names weapons, military aid, Foreign Military Financing or any bill on the subject. His statements about the U.S. relationship with the government of Israel are under the rhetoric heading below; none of them says what ending that relationship would mean for weapons or money.
  • [Position, 2026-04-13] The Akron Area League of Women Voters guide published by Signal Akron, under "State your position on foreign policy and national security": "I support a non-interventionist foreign policy, and only when the US homeland or territories are threatened, with very rare exceptions. That would allow us to cut the Defense budget." It names no country.

U.S. aid to Palestinians

  • Nothing located, at any date. Gaza, the West Bank, UNRWA and humanitarian aid appear nowhere in his campaign site or in any of his questionnaire answers.

Characterization of the conflict

  • Nothing located, at any date. The words Gaza, Palestinian, Hamas, genocide and ceasefire appear nowhere in his published material.

Israel-related rhetoric and lobbying

  • [Position, read 2026-10-05] His campaign site's issues page, headed "What I Stand For", under the heading "WAR WITH IRAN": "The United States should treat the Middle East with benign neglect. The United States’ “special relationship” with Israel should end. We should treat Israel like any other allied nation." The page's own metadata gives a first publication date of November 28, 2025 and a last revision of August 29, 2026; Ballotpedia reproduces the same three sentences from the site as it stood on April 23, 2026.
  • [Position, 2026-04-13] The Akron Area League of Women Voters guide published by Signal Akron, whose candidate information the outlet says was provided by the League for its May 5 primary guide: "The US should treat the Middle East with benign neglect. The “special relationship” with the government of Israel only leads the US into problems. We should treat Israel as we would any other allied nation."
  • [Position, 2026; read 2026-10-05] His Ballotpedia Candidate Connection answers, submitted in 2026 before the May 5 primary, carry the same passage among his key messages, with the wording "The "special relationship" with the government of Israel only leads the US into problems. We should treat Israel like any other allied nation."
  • [Position, read 2026-10-05] His 2026 iVoterGuide profile, asked "Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?": "The "special relationship" with Israel is a burden to the United States and it should be ended. The US should treat Israel as it does any other allied nation." The form carries no date. On the same form he chose, among four views of foreign policy, "The United States has become too involved in others' policies and should remain focused on issues regarding our own sovereignty unless in imminent danger."
  • [Earlier record, 2020] His 2020 iVoterGuide profile, from his race for the House in Illinois's 6th District, records "Disagree" beside the statement "I support BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanction) against Israel if they refuse to allow the creation of a Palestinian state." He answered most questions on that form. This is a question about boycotts, not about what the United States sends, and it is from before October 2023.
  • No statement by him about the American Israel Public Affairs Committee or any other advocacy organization on this subject was found.

Safety and antisemitism (context, not an answer to what America sends)

  • Nothing located, at any date.

What the campaign site and own pages say

  • [Read 2026-10-05] His home page describes a platform that "combines conservative stances on economic issues and generally liberal positions on social issues", and its three featured issues are tariffs, federal spending and victimless crimes. His issues page has seven headings: the war with Iran, tariffs, immigration, the federal debt, federal spending, tax reform and electoral reform. The Middle East passage quoted above is the only place Israel is mentioned anywhere on the site.
  • [Read 2026-10-05] His media page links six recorded interviews and talks and five news items, one of them his Ballotpedia page. The interviews were not listened to or watched for this card and are listed under places that could not be read.
  • [Position, 2026-09-29] WFMJ's overview of the four candidates summarizes his campaign site's positions on tariffs, spending and drug prohibition and notes that the site also discusses "the Iran war". It reports nothing from him on Israel.

The race

  • [Read 2026-10-05] His Ballotpedia page lists the special general election for U.S. Senate in Ohio on November 3, 2026: Jon Husted (R), Sherrod Brown (D), Bill Redpath (L), Gregory Levy (Independent), and three write-in candidates, Stephen Faris, Anthony Holliman and Timothy Telymonde. Husted was appointed on January 17, 2025 to the seat J.D. Vance left to become vice president, and the winner serves the rest of that term. Redpath won the Libertarian primary on May 5, 2026 against Jeffrey Kanter, who had been disqualified but remained on the ballot. The same page records his earlier races for the House in Illinois's 6th District in 2020 and for the Senate in Illinois in 2022.
  • [Read 2026-10-05] The Cleveland Jewish News list of 2026 statewide candidates names him among the Libertarian candidates and carries nothing from him on this subject.

Not on the card, and why

  • His campaign site's statement on the war with Iran, which says U.S. participation in it is unconstitutional and that the president should be impeached over it: not about what the United States sends to the government of Israel or to Palestinians.
  • His positions on tariffs, immigration, the federal debt, Social Security, Medicare, federal spending, taxes, drug laws and electoral reform: out of scope. Listed above so the absence can be checked.
  • His general call for a non-interventionist foreign policy and a smaller Defense budget: it names no country. It is in the deep dive as context and stays off the front.
  • His 2020 answer on boycotts of Israel: a boycott question is not about what the United States sends, and it is earlier record.
  • Jon Husted's, Sherrod Brown's, Gregory Levy's and the write-in candidates' records: they belong on their own cards.
